Responsible Use and Safety

Purpose

To maintain a comfortable, safe and secure learning environment for the library patrons and staff and to ensure a long life for library collections, furnishings, and equipment.

Policy

Patrons using the Library have a responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner that does not threaten the safety or interfere with the rights of any other patron or staff member.  The Library and Technology Services staff reserves the right to restrict a person’s use of the Library if they violate the York College Code of Conduct, or use inappropriate behavior that threatens the safety of patrons or LTS staff or other YCP employees in the library. 

General Security and Safety

  • Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied and directly supervised by a responsible adult while in the library. If any child is left in the library without any adult supervision, a library staff member will notify campus safety as appropriate. 
  • The library is open to the public. Personal possessions left unattended are an invitation to thieves. While we strive to maintain a safe and secure environment, it is up to you to be responsible for your own possessions. Please do not leave belongings unattended.
  • If you witness theft or believe a personal possession has been taken, please report the incident to LTS staff immediately.
  • The library’s third floor is a designated quiet but not silent area, please refrain from excess conversations, noises, and distractions.
  • Users must leave during emergency situations and evacuations and whenever library staff or safety personnel request they leave. Unauthorized individuals may not enter or remain in the library when it is closed. Emergency exits may only be used for in an emergency.
  • Visitors granted keys or access cards may not leave the doors propped open and may not allow access to unauthorized individuals.
  • The use of cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and vaping are prohibited  
  • Users must not interfere with an employee's performance of his/her duties nor subject library users or employees to physical or verbal abuse or harassment.
  • Leave library resources, furnishings, and equipment as you found them--or in better condition than you found them.
